Rear-End Car Accidents Often Treacherous
A car crash can change someone’s life in the blink of an eye. People may assume that some types of car accidents are less likely to result in injury, but the reality is that any type of crash can seriously hurt victims and may even result in fatality. Rear-end accidents are a common type of car crash that can happen when a driver isn’t paying attention or is driving recklessly. Though they are often just an inconvenience for victims, they can prove fatal, the way that one recent rear-end collision here in Louisiana just did.
According to police, the crash happened during a recent afternoon on a state highway. A driver headed north attempted to make a left-hand turn into a driveway, reducing the car’s speed in advance. Officers say that a pickup truck, heading in the same direction, rear-ended the car for reasons that are not clear at this point.
The driver and passenger in the car, a husband and wife, died at the scene of the accident and the driver of the pickup truck received only minor injuries. Authorities have charged the truck driver with careless operation and not wearing a seat belt, though they say they may file additional charges once their investigation is complete. Officials say they are awaiting results of toxicology screenings.
Even if the pickup truck driver ends up being found not guilty of any criminal charges here in Louisiana, the family of the couple who died may have other options to hold him accountable for the crash. They could decide to file a wrongful death civil claim against him and/or any other parties deemed responsible. Doing so may result in monetary damages that could be useful in covering any expenses incurred as a result of the crash. Those in a similar situation may want to consult an attorney to discuss litigation dealing with car accidents.
